Osaka YMCA International Kindergarten

Teaching Assistant

There are two Osaka YMCA facilities that runs an International Kindergarten: Tosabori and Tennoji. Interacting with kindergarten children is a very active and rewarding position. Interns will show and demonstrate
behaviors to children through activities, play, and team games. Interns need to not only be patient, cheerful, and
understanding, but have enough stamina to keep up with the ever changing transitions of young learners.

There are two positions available: One Senior Intern position available at Tosabori International Kindergarten, and One Early Childhood Development Intern level position at Tennoji International Kindergarten.

Personal and Professional Learning Opportunities

  • Japanese culture through interacting with staff, students, host families and other interns

  • Working with mentors and other individuals that can help guide interns through their internship and expose them to opportunities to which they can aspire

  • Helping early learners in an English environment understand the “sense of self”, closely  influenced by YMCA Canada’s “Play to learn” and the International Baccalaureate program used at International schools across the world

  • Developing and expanding life skills such as leadership, public speaking skills, cultural awareness, confidence, teamwork, resilience and independence

Regarding accommodation during your internship:

Interns will most likely be staying with a few host families during their internship.  Short-term accommodation might also be organized during the intervals of host families.

Homestays provide a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to live in a typical Japanese household. Interns will be matched with a suitable family and will be expected to become “part of the family” for the time they are staying at the family residence. This means, eating meals together, contributing to the household chores and going on family trips to various attractions etc. on your days off.

There will also be a hostel very close to Tosabori that Global has a partnership with. All interns will be provided a special discount but will need to go through Global for reservations.

Gradual Schedule

As a YMCA Osaka International Kindergarten Sr Intern, the following schedule has been prepared for the Sr Intern to gradually take on more responsibility in the  classroom as he/she becomes more accustomed and familiar with the students, system, what we do, and how we do it. The Sr Intern will spend 1 week in each class. Classes are divided into grades, each grade having children of different developmental levels.

Grades

  • Pre-Kinder (Pre-K) age 2-3 years old

  • Kinder 1 (K1) age 3-4 years old

  • Kinder 2 (K2) age 4-5 years old

  • Kinder 3 (K3) age 5-6 years old

Tosabori Intl Kindg

Schedule Stage 1

For the first 4 weeks, the Sr Intern will spend 1 week in each grade. Initially he/she will be getting to know the teachers, students, and what they are studying. Every Friday (at the latest, earlier if you and the classroom teachers feel confident) you will be asked to lead an activity/lesson or one task of the day. This can range from leading a song or reading a story, up to preparing and leading a craft.

Schedule Stage 2

For the next 4 weeks, the Sr Intern will continue to spend a week in each grade. Taking the knowledge gained from training with that class regarding who they are, what they are capable of and what they are not capable of, the Sr Intern will be expected to lead 2 or 3 activities/lessons or tasks of the day.

At the end, the kindergarten hopes that the Sr Intern will have learnt not only about their own capabilities and adaptability to an international working environment, but also about children's capacity to surprise everyone with their abilities.

Hear from interns about their experience!
