Matsuodai Japanese Kindergarten Teaching Assistant

Matsuodai Kindergarten was founded in 1976 and believes in fostering a child's mind, body and spirit by interacting with people and nature. It uses the "learn through playing" approach on education.

Matsuodai Kindergarten always places the children’s future as top priority and promises the following:

  1. To stimulate the children's will to “play” at their own judgement and to create a supportive environment

  2. To educate children to nurture a healthy body and spirit through their gymnastics and aquatics program

  3. To stand by, protect and interact with each child by providing the best care possible

The Matsuodai Kindergarten Intern is responsible for learning how to care for young learners and to assist homeroom teachers in a Japanese education style. The intern's role will focus on the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The intern's “comfort zone” might be tested because the curriculum is designed
for Japanese students and is delivered mostly in Japanese.

Personal and Professional Learning Opportunities

  • Helping early learners to understand the "sense of self"

  • Expanding knowledge on Japanese culture and language through the internship

  • Collaborating with mentors and other individuals that can help guide interns through their internship and expose one to opportunities to aspire to

  • Public speaking / Leadership skills

  • Using existing skills to provide assistance and suggestions to improve program/curriculum content

  • Developing and expanding life skills such as leadership, public speaking skills, cultural awareness, confidence, teamwork, acceptance, decision making and independence

Regarding accommodation during your internship:

Interns will most likely be staying with a few host families during their internship.  Hotel/Hostels might be arranged during the intervals of host families.

Homestays provide a unique opportunity to experience what it’s like to live in a typical Japanese household. Interns will be matched with a suitable family and will be expected to become “part of the family” for the time they are staying at the family residence. This means, eating meals together, contributing to the household chores and going on family trips to various attractions etc. on your days off.

There will also be a hostel very close to Tosabori that Global has a partnership with. Global interns will be provided a special discount but will need to go through Global for reservations.

What should you bring?

  • Clothes that are easy to move in (YMCA shirts if you have any)

  • Smaller luggage/bag to pack for homestays (to make it easier to move around)

  • Gifts for your homestays

  • Laptop and chargers/adapters - Interns will be asked to prepare a short presentation on their home country/culture

  • English Children's book from your home country - optional to bring and read to the students

  • Body wipes to refresh yourself and help cool you down

  • Water bottle - water filling stations provided at Tosabori and at Rokko

  • Portable Wifi or SIM Card

  • Formal attire (suits, dress, etc) or traditional cultural attire for GYC General assembly

**The first few weeks your body will go through a transition phase so it is strongly recommended to bring some vitamin/immune boost and your own medication for when you get sick.
