On the final day, the GYC comes to a close with the General Assembly, an assembly where the participants of the event debate, pass resolutions and suggest amendments on debate questions that they had come up with the day before. This year we had the following questions: Is complete gender equality achievable in 100 years?, Should males pay for the first date?, "Women-only train carriages should be used globally." Do you agree?. After an intense two hours of going back and forth on ideas the following resolutions were passed.
1. Is complete gender equality achievable in 100 years?
Line 1: Complete gender equality is not achievable within 100 years
Line 2: Due to social norms and cultural and religious traditions that have existed for generations, changes that support gender equality are difficult to implement within 100 years.
Line 3: The patriarchal structure of corporations, families, and other secular aspects of society prevent the implementation of policies that promote gender equality.
Line 4: 100 years is too short of a time frame; however, we believe that societal and historical trends trend toward complete gender equality over time.
2. Should males pay for the first date?
Line 1: When the man is expected to pay for the woman it is signaling that he is superior and that the woman is dependent.
Line 2: Females’ desire for fair competition in the workplace means that these expectations of males being the provider should be abolished.
Line 3: Although it is hard to completely remove ourselves from current perceptions, we should try to change what people think.
Line 4: There are variables that influence specific situations/dates.
Line 5: When a guy offers to pay for the first date, it’s important to consider his intentions. He might just want to be hospitable and show his love to you instead of trying to be superior.
3. "Women-only train carriages should be used globally." Do you agree?
Line 1: By segregating people according to gender, it may create more contention between males and females
Line 2: By separating genders, it does not respect the LGBT community by not recognizing those who might identify as transsexual.
Line 3: It does not address the source of the problem which is the mentality.
Line 4: It is socially disempowering to all people as all people should be able to sit or stand anywhere and feel safe.
Line 5: We should raise awareness of the problem and educate the public.
Line 6: Solutions can include tighter security measures such as installing security cameras and patrol officers
Line 7: Not only is it inconvenient, especially during rush hours, but it is inefficient in countries with less resources.
