About the YMCA Movement
YMCA helps young people to better themselves, to better their communities and to better their world. It is the oldest and one of the largest youth organizations in the world. Founded in London in 1844, it has grown to reach over 65 million people a year across 120 countries.
It has deep roots in communities, decades of experience enabling young people and communities to thrive, and an extensive global network. It has nearly 90,000 staff, some 920,000 volunteers and 12,000 branches worldwide.

Founded in 1882 (Meiji 15), Osaka YMCA was one of the first to engage in educational ventures such as English schools and preparatory schools. The pioneering spirit of these early efforts continues today through vocational schools, Japanese language education for people with overseas roots, support education for high school and middle school students, and the establishment and operation of Japan’s first public-private school incorporating international school curricula and the International Baccalaureate program.

There are 34 local associations of the YMCA in Japan and over five thousand young volunteers involved in various activities such as leaders for camps and programmes with handicapped children. YMCAs in Japan have always tried to respond to the needs of society by working in the fields of life-long learning, higher education, health and fitness, social welfare and community development, and also by placing themselves on the side of those whose voices often go unheard; specifically children, women, immigrants and the elderly.

Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs
The YMCA is a voluntary, international, Christian, youth movement which was founded in 1844. The Asia and Pacific Alliance of YMCAs is a Federation of 27 YMCA movements in Asia and Pacific countries and territories. It is an integral part of the World Alliance of YMCAs and the representative body of the YMCAs in this region. Formation of the then Asia Alliance as a regional body began in 1949.
